The area from which the hair is taken is called the donor area. This transplant is done under the effect of anaesthesia. The main purpose for hair transplant is to restore the hair growth of the areas where the hair growth is limited.  The first hair transplant surgery was done in 1939 in Japan with single scalp hairs. This condition is more common in males as compared to females. Hair transplants are known to be more successful more than the usage of any hair restoration products.

How is hair transplant surgery done?

Hair transplant surgery is done to treat the areas of baldness on the head area. The surgery is performed by professional surgeons. This does not include any foreign material or chemical insertion done by professional surgeons. The surgery occurs in parts and is performed by specialized surgeons for people whose hair has been lost due to various reasons such as genetic reasons, pollution, excessive use of creams or gels, extensive use of hair appliances etc.

The exposure of heat on the hairs weakens the hair follicles and causes hair fall.  Over exposure to pollution also causes hair fall or reduction in hair growth by blocking the follicles and limited the speed of hair growth. It is very important to be considerate and take guidance of experts when planning to get your hair transplant surgery done.

The hair transplant surgery is not done in every case of baldness and is completely dependent on the day to day basis. The hair patch is created using hair taken from any other part of the body including lashes and brows. In this technique, the hair follicles are removed from any part and planted on the portions wherein the growth of hairs is limited. The process is also known as follicular hair transplantation (FUT). This process is further divided into strip harvesting and follicular unit extraction.

In strip harvesting, a strip of skin with good skin growth is taken out and put on the areas with less or no hairs. The strip size usually varies from 6-10 inches long. Follicular unit extraction, which is the most common method of hair transplant, involves patching of hair in a group of four or more hairs at a place.

The hair transplant surgery also has certain side effects such as bleeding infection, swelling around the eyes, numbness or lack of sensation on the treated areas of the scalp. The growth rate of the transplant surgery may vary from person to person, however as per the statistics, the success rate is around eighty-eight five percent of the total surgeries happening in a year. The hairs are found to regain their growth within three four months after the surgery. The surgery can also be done on the basis of outpatients. One should also be clear about the cost of hair plant surgery and the precaution to be taken beforehand.

The entire process can be summarized into basic steps categorizing all the major events. The hair transplant begins by cleaning the head with a sterile solution. Hair follicles are taken from the donor areas using a scalpel. The follicles are taken from softly and trimming is done at the ends of the hairs.  The administration of anaesthesia is done to the patient to reduce the sensation in the area of the surgery after the patient comes under the effect of anaesthesia, which generally occurs within 1-2 minutes, the tissues from the bald area are taken out and the healthy hair patch from the donor area is sutured at the same place. These sutures are removed after 10-15 days of the surgery .This type of surgery is a non invasive process and the incision heals naturally. After the surgery, patients are often prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and certain hair growth stimulators.

There are certain major factors that decide the overall cost of the surgery such as extent of the transplant procedure, availability of slots, medical conditions if any, the surgical technique used. The cost of the surgery is also proportional to the number of grafts inserted. The more number of grafts is provided, the more will the hair transplant surgery cost.
