Dental Care Importance

Dental medical procedures are branches of dentistry – whose main aim is to treat problems associated with the oral cavity (gums, teeth, oral mucosa as well as other related tissues).A number of problems have emerged that impacts one’s oral health and thereby deteriorate one’s quality of life.

These problems are widespread and vary from- impacted teeth to tooth loss. All of these problems can be alleviated with the help of procedures known as dental surgeries.

Dental surgery deals with treating the ailing jaw bones and teeth. Different types of surgeries include-

1. Endodontic- This basically covers the root or pulp of the tooth.

It has been further categorised into-

A. Root canal- In this surgery, the dentist removes the inflamed tooth pulp via drilling and replaces it with an inert substance. After that, a crown is placed atop of the tooth.

This procedure is carried out when the tooth is damaged and there are chances of damage to the tooth root. Root canalling is done in order to prevent extraction of tooth (by creating a canal).

B. Pulpotomy- This is carried out prior to the canalling treatment which involves opening the tooth’s pulp chamber and removing the infected portion- usually done for maintaining the vitality of the pulp tissue.

C. Pulpectomy- With this process, the entire pulp is removed for alleviating pain and suffering of the patient. Pulpectomy is advanced form of pulpotomy.

D. Apicoectomy- This is also known as retrograde root canal system, root end filling or root-resection. Here the tip/apex of the tooth root is removed via entry into the gums and then the diseased material is extracted. Carried out when full blown root canal surgery does not seem to provide any benefits to the patient.

2. Prosthodontics- Prosthetics are used for rectifying the diseased status of the tooth or oral cavity. Includes-

  • Crown( caps)- Employed in root canal surgeries; made from biocompatible material like tin or gold and aluminium mixture, CMC/PMC (ceramic/porcelain metal composite).
  • Veneers- These are similar to crowns but are thinner and are also called as dental porcelain laminates or porcelain veneers. They are meant to cover only the forward portion of the tooth- don’t contribute to the biting or grinding ability of the tooth rather are used aesthetically. No drilling and reshaping of the tooth is required – veneers bond to the front portion of the teeth.
  • Bridges- In this process, when few teeth have been separated by a dental specialist that leaves a wide hole of sorts between one outstanding tooth to the following, this can be repaired putting an extension called as bridge. It is basically a row or set of prosthetic crowns.
  • Implants- When there is decayed tooth rather than reshaping nearby teeth so as to put a scaffold over them and the tooth extraction site, you can choose embeds. These are titanium studs or posts that are carefully set into the tooth attachment and bone (maxilla or mandible) where your tooth or teeth used to be. After position, the territory is then permitted to recuperate for around 4 to a half year. Subsequently, a counterfeit tooth is set on the embed (generally a projection and crown).
  • Dentures ( false teeth)- A Complete set of false teeth are used, usually taken by old age people.

3. Orthodontic Treatment

This includes setting gadgets on your teeth to adjust their position and to address your chomp. Includes- implants and implants supported prosthesis, apicoectomy and tooth extraction. Fiberotomy- involves strengthening the gums and the gingival fibres around the tooth to prevent dental relapse.
